Goal

Develop an efficient mobile version of CDC’s Physician’s Handbook on Medical Certification of Death (2003 revision) using cross-platform mobile app technology Ionic.

Summary + Outcome

To improve the quality of mortality data collected by NCHS, IIU was asked to examine CDC’s Physician’s Handbook on Medical Certification of Death (2003 revision) – to see if a mobile version could be created – to facilitate the handbook’s use by healthcare providers.

As a quick reference guide, a mobile version of the handbook was created using Ionic – a cross platform mobile app technology. Ionic enabled IIU to rapidly build both iOS and Android versions of the handbook using the same code base written in AngularJS. Primary technical needs of the mobile reference guide being quick offline access to static content and with no special need for client-server interaction made Ionic suitable for this project as it helped the team reuse HTML code from the Polymer prototype built earlier as well meet the needs of users from two major mobile OS groups without duplicating code.

The iOS and Android version of the reference guide are available in the Apple and Google app stores respectively.
